Moulton Student Council “Bags” Tourney

Shelbyville students, local community members, & residents of the surrounding area showcased their hand-eye coordination combined with their skill with a toss. Seventy-two teams registered and competed in the Saturday, April 20^th bean bag toss tournament. Moulton Middle School Student Council organized and advertised this event and would like to thank all associated with the tourney. We appreciate your participation.

            We would like to congratulate the winners which we hope teams will attempt to dethrone next year. The fourth & fifth grade bracket winners were Rece Pullen & Christian Sieger from team “Sagging Baggers.” The sixth through eighth grade bracket winners were Drake Manship & Dillon Birch of team “Double D Baggers.” Lastly, the winners of the High School through adult bracket winners were Mike Huckstead & Jeremy Piper of team “HD Supply.”

            Moulton Student Council has fundraised for a variety of other non-profit local organizations including the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation which supports children & teens diagnosed w/ cancer. The money generated from Saturday’s event will be deposited into the council’s account. These funds will support our goals for next year. We have already purchased gifts for the Veteran’s day assembly, covered the cost of the PBIS 4^th quarter reward party at the ShelbyvilleAquaticCenter, and generated funds for the Moulton activity account as well as many others. Our mission is to be as involved as practical to meet the demands for community service and school improvement. We are conditioning students to be active, contributing members of the community. They are the future.

            The success of the tournament should accommodate the majority of our ambitions for the upcoming school year. Entry fees combined with concession sales generated funds that exceeded our predictions. This is the first year and we hope to build the tournament up into an annual fundraiser that is looked forward to by all. Much of the success of this event started with the initial steps. Home Depot donated enough lumber for four sets. Mr. Munch and his skilled high school students built these sets from a design. We quickly decided that we needed more sets. Connelly’s, the local lumber yard, donated enough lumber and hardware to construct eight more sets. My grandpa, Ed Wright, and I built these sets. We also finished the other four with primer, paint, and a school spirit design. Mrs. Biehler and her students provided their services to construct the bags. Linda Reber also donated hours of time to ensure the bags were of high quality and met regulations. The entire Physical Education department including, Mrs. Shoaff, Mr. Kramer, Mr. Applegate, Mrs. Bogart, and Mr. Harkins then used the sets to introduce the game to nearly the entire student body. They taught the students the rules, techniques to be competitive, and provided a chance to hone their skills. This sparked interest in the tournament. This was definitely a team effort that involved the students, faculty, community members, and local business owners together for a common goal.

            We hope to add to the experience for next year as we incorporate improvements. Once again, thank you to all involved. We would like to also give a special thanks to Mr. Tomblin, Moulton principal, for his support and donated time for the tourney. Ms. McDonald served as a judge and competed while Mrs. Applegate ran the high stress job of bracket organizer. Thank you to Mrs. Bauer for running the registration table. Also, thank you to Chelsey Scott & Pauline Wright for your role with setup & running side games.

We appreciate all of the support. Please plan to compete in next year’s tourney.

Band Notes

On Saturday, March 23rd, Moulton Middle School band students attended IESA Solo and Ensemble at St. Anthony Grade School in Effingham. The following students earned superior ratings at contest: Braxton Vice (percussion), Maggie Furr (trumpet), Kelsey Toland (clarinet), and Melangel Shellenbarger (tenor saxophone). In addition, Kelsey Toland was recognized with a best of day award for her clarinet solo. All of the students worked hard on their own time to prepare their pieces. Mrs. Sharla Thilker attended as a piano accompanist. The Shelbyville Bands are directed by Ms. Emma Burrows.
