The following notification includes very important information for our student population utilizing the edgenuity platform.  Implementation of this temporary digital platform was compressed, and our understanding of the program becomes increasingly more sophisticated every day.  We are thankful to have had the opportunity to learn and grow alongside all those who are involved in this situational approach to instruction.

Over the past couple weeks, we have noticed data trends that are very concerning.  Although many of our remote learners are on track to 100% course completion, many are not going to be able to finish the courses enrolled within the remaining semester schedule.  To a certain extent, this is due to the later start to the school year, which lessened the available school attendance days.

With that said, we are prepared to make reasonable and realistic accommodations to help support our student population.  Make note that this does not represent a loosening of expectations, but instead, properly accounts for the 2 weeks of time unaccounted for at the start of the school year.

Listed below are the key elements that will take effect immediately.  Of note, all academic notoriety is determined by semester grades at the high school level.  That includes honor roll, rank in class, and transcript grades.

  • Students using edgenuity will need to complete 80% of each course enrolled.  To reference student progress in this regard, please always review the progress indicator listed as % Count.   Once a student reaches 80% completion, they will be allowed to stop progressing through the course if they are satisfied with their overall grade.  This revision will account for the delayed start date.  For grading purposes, we will use the OVERALL grade for students who have completed 80% of the course enrolled.  That will pair back the content in all courses by 20%.

  • For students who do not complete 80% of any particular course, we will use the ACTUAL grade, which takes into account incomplete work and time on task.

  • Our edgenuity team will be sending out automated reports to all parents every week using the digital communication platform.  Additionally, our edgenuity liaisons will check in with all students every week to offer support and guidance.

  • Students will have the opportunity to participate in a weekly google meeting with Mr. Ladd (every Tuesday @ 2:15pm), wherein the group can ask questions, interact with other remote learners, and discuss school happenings.  A link will be sent to all student gmail accounts 30 minutes prior to the scheduled meeting.  Please use your school appointed chromebook or a computer that has a webcam enabled.  The first google meeting of this sort will occur on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

  • In reference to the semester project/semester exam expectation.  Remote learners are unique in that they can choose either option for each of their courses enrolled: complete a semester project or complete the final exam in edgenuity.

We thank you all for your continued understanding and support.  In past communication, we have recommended 5 hours of learning every day.  This metric is used purely for attendance purposes, and is in adherence with the directives issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.

To that point, the edgenuity system may recommend that students invest more or less time based upon a student's individualized progress.  Because we cannot control the diverse variables that might exist within the remote learning environment, we will continue to trust the families and students involved. A minimum of 5 hours a day will continue to be encouraged and advised by Shelbyville High School.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out in correspondence.
